This ‘santa de vestir’ or ‘dress up saint’ is a superb example of the unequaled quality of saints produced by the School of Quito in the 17th & 18th century. With tiny reverse painted glass eyes she holds a little piece of heart in her right hand. ‘The Virgin Mary doesn't die, she goes to sleep and is carried to heaven by angels’. Minor paint lifting otherwise good condition. The muslin clothing was reconstructed around 150 years ago. Includes clothing dating to around 1950. Collected in the late 1970s. $1800. |
